The taper fade

The most misunderstood word at the chair. A taper is not a shorter fade or a lower one — it only touches the corners and the neck, and if you ask for one expecting bare sides you will not get them.

The one thing to get straight

A fade is a gradient down the whole side of your head. A taper is a gradient in two small places: the corners above your ears, and the hairline at the back of your neck. Everything between them keeps its length.

That is the entire difference, and it causes more disappointment than any other word in a barbershop. Somebody asks for "a taper fade" meaning "a fade, but not too extreme", sits down, and gets a haircut where the sides are essentially untouched. They were both using the word correctly. They were not using it to mean the same thing.

If what you want is a fade that is simply subtle, the thing you are after is a low skin fade. Ask for that instead and you will get what you pictured.

Read the bottom row. A taper is the only cut here you can have done before a holiday and not think about again until you are home.

So what is a “taper skin fade”?

A real thing, and not a contradiction: it means the taper is taken all the way to bare skin at its lowest point — so the corners and the neck hairline finish on scalp rather than on a short guard — while the sides still keep their length.

It is the most conservative way to have skin in a haircut at all. Up close the edges are as sharp as any fade. From any distance it is just a neat short back and sides.

Who should ask for one

  • Anyone who has been burned before. If you have walked out of a shop feeling shorn, a taper is the cut that cannot do that to you.
  • Anyone who cannot get back often. Six weeks is realistic. Nothing about a taper looks wrong as it grows; it just softens.
  • Scissor cuts and longer styles. A taper is how you tidy the outline of a longer haircut without turning it into a different one. This is the classic gentleman's cut, and it is why it has outlived every trend since.
  • Thick hair that sticks out at the bottom. A taper removes the shelf at the neckline, which is usually the actual complaint.
  • Growing out a fade. A taper is the staging post. It keeps you looking cut while the sides catch up.

What to say

Say: "A taper — corners and the neckline, leave the sides." Spelling out what you want left alone is what stops the misunderstanding, because it is the half of the instruction most people never say out loud.

Then add one of these:

  • "Take the neckline to skin" if you want the sharp finish.
  • "Keep it natural at the back" if you would rather it faded into nothing with no visible edge — better if you wear collars, and it grows out invisibly.

A blocked, squared-off neckline is the third option and the one to avoid unless you are getting it recut fortnightly: it grows into a visible shelf within about ten days.

What it costs

A taper is usually priced as a standard cut rather than as fade work.

Common questions

Is a taper fade the same as a fade?

No. A fade is a gradient down the whole side of the head. A taper is a gradient only at the corners above the ears and at the neckline, leaving the sides their length. Using the words interchangeably is the single most common reason people are unhappy with a haircut they asked for correctly.

Can a taper be a skin fade?

Yes — a taper taken to skin finishes on bare scalp at the corners and the neck hairline, while the sides stay long. It is the most conservative way to have any shaved skin in a haircut.

How long does a taper last?

Four to six weeks, which is longer than any version of a skin fade. Nothing about it looks wrong as it grows, so the interval is set by how long the top gets rather than by the taper itself.

Is a taper good for curly hair?

Very. It removes the bulk that builds at the neckline without cutting into the body of the curl, which is usually exactly the complaint — the hair is not too long, it is too wide at the bottom.

Should I ask for a blocked or a natural neckline?

Natural unless you are back every two weeks. A blocked neckline is a straight shaved edge and it looks sharp for about ten days, after which the regrowth below the line reads as a shelf. A natural neckline fades into nothing and grows out invisibly.
