What drops
Picture the line where the shaved section stops. On a standard fade it runs level, like a belt round your head, from the temple straight back past the ear and across the occipital bone to the other side.
On a drop fade that line does not stay level. Behind the ear it turns and runs downward, so it sits lower at the back than at the front — following the curve of your skull rather than ignoring it.
Like the burst, this is a shape, not a height. You still have to choose how high it starts: low, mid or high drop fades are all ordinary things to ask for.
What it fixes
Heads are not spheres. Most have a flatter area at the back, above the nape, and a straight fade line draws attention to it by putting a horizontal edge across the flattest part.
Dropping the line does two things. It leaves a little more hair over the flat area, which fills it visually. And it replaces the horizontal edge with a curve, which the eye reads as roundness. The effect is subtle and it is the reason the cut exists — not fashion, geometry.
Worth knowing: if the back of your head is already round and full, a drop fade does very little for you, and a straight line is cleaner. Ask your barber which you have. They are looking at it and you are not.
You may already be getting one
Plenty of barbers drop the line slightly on everybody, because it flatters most heads, and never mention it. If you have been happy with your fades and could not say why, this may well be the reason.
Which makes the word useful in exactly two situations: when you have moved to a new barber and want what the old one did, and when you have been getting straight fades and the back has never looked quite right. In both cases "drop fade" names the thing in two words.
What it goes with
- Textured crops and anything short on top. The most common pairing. A drop keeps the shape rounded when there is no length to round it off.
- A fringe worn forward. The dropped line at the back balances the weight at the front, which otherwise makes the head read front-heavy in profile.
- Curls on top. Works well, though if you want to keep real weight at the back the burst is doing that job more deliberately.
- Beards. A drop runs the fade line down toward the jaw, which is where a faded beard begins, so the two can be joined into one continuous taper. Ask for them to be connected if that is what you want — it is a choice, not automatic.
What to say
Say "drop fade", then give the height, then say how far you want the line to drop. The last one is where the variation lives: a slight drop is a tidy haircut, a steep one is a visible design choice that follows the hairline almost down to the nape.
"Just a slight drop" is the phrase that gets you the flattering version without the statement. If you want the steeper one, say "drop it right down behind the ear" and point at where it should finish.
What it costs
Nothing extra — the shape of the line is part of cutting the fade.

Upkeep is set by the height, not the shape — a fortnight for a high drop, three to four weeks for a low one.
Common questions
What is a drop fade?
A fade whose line curves downward behind the ear rather than running level around the head, so it follows the shape of the skull. It is a shape rather than a height, so it can be low, mid or high.
What is the difference between a drop fade and a regular fade?
Only the line. A regular fade runs level all the way round; a drop fade turns down behind the ear and sits lower at the back. The length, the blend and the price are the same.
Is a drop fade the same as a burst fade?
No, and they curve opposite ways. A drop arcs downward behind the ear and fades the nape like any other fade. A burst fans upward around the ear and leaves the nape long.
Does a drop fade suit everyone?
It flatters a flat back of the head, which is most people. If yours is already round and full it does very little, and a straight line looks cleaner. Your barber can see which you have and will tell you if you ask.
Can you have a low drop fade?
Yes. Height and shape are separate choices, so low, mid and high drop fades are all ordinary requests. A low drop is about as subtle as a skin fade gets.
